Skífan ehf. was founded in 1976, originally as a record company, but its roots can be traced back to 1973. The English translation of “ Skífan” is “ The Record”.

Today, Skífan’s operational territory is entertainment at large, its scope covers such fields as music production and distribution, music & entertainment retail stores, a musical instrument store, music publishing, home video entertainment and distribution, theatrical film production and distribution, video games distribution.

OWNERSHIP

Skífan is wholly owned by Northern Light Communication (NLC). NLC also owns The Icelandic Broadcasting Corporation (IBC).
IBC is the core of a media conglomerate operating three radio stations, three
TV channels and a MMDS service. IBC also owns 35% in a mobile telephone
company called TAL.

RETAIL ACTIVITIES

Skífan has been in the forefront in the music retail business. Skífan owns
and operates:
• Four retail record and home entertainment shops in the greater Reykjavík area.
• Hljódfćrahús Reykjavíkur engaged in distribution of sheet music and musical
instruments.

MUSIC

In the early 1980s, Skífan started distribution of records and is the licensee
for PolyGram and EMI/Virgin. Skífan owns and operates a state of the art
sound recording studio, Stúdío Syrland. In 1998, Skífan merged with Spor,
which was the second biggest music company in Iceland after Skífan. Together
Skífan and Spor have about 80% market share of the Icelandic music market.
With Spor came the licensee for Sony and Warner.

FILMS

In 1984, Skífan entered the home video distribution as the exclusive licensee
for Columbia-Tristar. Since, Skífan has become the exclusive licensee for
Twentieth Century Fox and Miramax International to name but a few. Skífan
has been involved in production of feature films and co- production of animated
features.

CINEMA

Since 1989, Skífan has operated Regnboginn, which is a four screen cinema in Reykjavík. Regnboginn has frequently been the venue for film festivals of
various nature.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Through Hljódfćrahús Reykjavíkur, Skífan is the exclusive distributor for such brand names as Yamaha, Fender, Washburn, Vic-Firth, G.H.S., Hohner, Remo and War wick.

AUDIO & VIDEO EQUIPMENT & ACCESSORIES

Skífan is an exclusive distributor for manufacturers like TDK, AM Denmark, LIFT, Ampex, Barco, ACE, Vistek, Fidelipak, Lowel-Light, Porta Brace and Anton Bauer.

COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT

In 1995, Skífan commenced distribution of video games and now plays a key role in that area with exclusive distribution deals with such brands as Sony ( PlayStation), Virgin Interactive, Electronic Arts, Sierra, Microprose, Eidos, Dorling Kindersley and Ocean.
